Research at the Department

The research interests of the Department’s faculty and staff span a range of areas and subjects. Based on the research areas covered by the three Divisions of the Department, research within the department focuses on the following:

Music Technology

Networked Music Performance, Machine Listening Systems and Machine Musicianship, Music Information Retrieval, Electroacoustic Music, Computer Music, Sound Synthesis, Interactive Audio and Music Systems, Music and Motion, Generating Music from Laser-Plasma sources, Machine Learning in Audio and Music.

One Guitar Band

One Guitar Band is an augmented guitar system that transforms the user’s playing in real time into a full musical accompaniment with drums, bass, and additional sound layers.

AudioInsight: A web application for Audiovisual Exploration of Musical Instrument Sounds

AudioInsight is a web application for exploring and analyzing sound datasets. It provides tools for statistical analysis, parameter visualization, and correlation inspection.

Audio Recognition of Percussion Sounds via Machine Learning with an Automated Sound Generation System

A combination of automated percussion sound generation and machine learning to study the relationship between an object’s physical properties and its sound. This approach opens new possibilities for intelligent analysis, classification, and the design of new sounding structures.

Auditorium Auralisation

An auralisation of the department’s auditorium that allows users to interactively listen to how different audio signals sound from different positions within the space.

Dereverberation of Percussive Signals using Cold Diffusion

A prototype AI-based architecture for removing reverberation from drum recordings, aiming to produce a cleaner and more natural sound for music production applications.

Physics Acoustics and Optoacoustics

Musical Acoustics, study of the vibrational characteristics of musical instruments and their quality control, Technology of Acoustical Measurements, generation and detection of very high frequency elastic waves (nanoacoustics) using ultrafast lasers, optoacoustic technology for motion and vibrations detection, simulations of vibro-acoustics and optoacoustics, acoustic sources by laser-induced dielectric breakdown of air, microacoustical characterization of materials, bioacoustics, architectural acoustics, phonon technology, phonon-photon scattering.

Acoustically Driven Crystalline Undulators (A-CUs) for the generation of intense and monochromatic gamma rays

Development of a novel technology for generating tunable gamma radiation through acoustic waves in silicon crystals. The research opens new perspectives for applications in physics, nuclear technology, and medicine.

Acoustic Metamaterials for acoustic improvement of spaces, acoustic structures, and musical instruments

Research on acoustic metamaterials and phononic crystals using Laser Plasma Sound Sources for precise acoustic characterization and sound control. Applications range from room acoustics to musical instruments and sound insulation materials.

Nano- and Micro- Acoustic Waves Generated by Pulsed Lasers and Applications in Materials Science

Research on laser-generated acoustic waves and their applications in materials science. Applications range from non-destructive testing to surface nanostructuring.

Laser-Plasma Sound Sources

Research on Laser-Plasma Sound Sources and on controlling their acoustic characteristics through laser parameters. Applications range from acoustic metrology to sound reproduction and biomedicine.

Vibroacoustic Analysis and Design Optimization of String Musical Instruments

Analysis and optimization of string musical instrument design through vibroacoustic measurements, simulations, and modern materials. This approach opens new paths for the development of both traditional and contemporary instruments.

Vibroacoustic Analysis and Sound Synthesis of Percussion Musical Instruments

Study of the vibroacoustic behavior of percussion musical instruments, such as cymbals and drums, using simulations and experimental measurements. This approach supports sound synthesis and the optimization of instrument design.
