Dr Nektarios Papadogiannis

Dr. Nektarios Papadogiannis is a Professor in Wave Physics with emphasis on Acoustics & Optics. He graduated second in his year from the Physics Department of the University of Crete in 1990. He obtained a master’s degree in Physics in 1992 and was awarded a PhD in Experimental Physics in 1996 by the same Department in collaboration with Bernard Lyon I University and FORTH. He is Research Director at the Institute of Plasma Physics and Lasers of HMU.

Dr Ilias Potamitis

Dr. Potamitis I. is an electrical & computer engineer (Dipl.Eng-PhD) and his main research area is signal processing and pattern recognition with emphasis on 1-D signals (e.g. audio, vibrational recordings). His scientific outlook is oriented towards the emerging field of digital agriculture and the opportunities it creates for the application of data intensive science. His current areas of interest include automatic monitoring of biodiversity, applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and Deep learning applications embedded in systems and the Internet of Things (IoT). His ongoing research is focused on the design and implementation of insect and bird surveillance (both hardware and software) at global scales.

Dr. Vasilios Dimitriou

 Dr. Vasilis Dimitriou is a Professor in “Finite Elements in Mechanics and Optoacoustic Applications”. He received his Mathematics Degree from the University of Crete and his Master’s Degree and PhD from the National Technical University of Athens, School of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Mechanical Constructions and Automation Control. He is the Dean of the School of Music and Optoacoustic Technologies. He is an elected member of the Research Committee of HMU and the Three-member Steering Committee of the Institute of Plasma Physics and Lasers of HMU.

Dr. Katerina Tzedaki

Dr. Tzedaki Aikaterini is an Associate Professor specializing in “Electroacoustic Music Composition”. She received her MA in Electroacoustic Music Composition in 2002 (City University, London) and her Ph.D in Electroacoustic Music Composition in 2012 (De Montofort University, England). Her research interests include: Electroacoustic Music Composition, Soundscape Research and Composition, Acoustic Ecology, Sound Design, New Musical Instruments, Music Performance and Interaction Issues. Her music has been presented at many Greek and international festivals and conferences. She is a founding member of the Hellenic Association of Electroacoustic Music Composers and the Hellenic Society for Acoustic Ecology.

Dr. Maximos Kaliakatsos-Papakostas

Dr. Maximos Kaliakatsos-Papakostas holds a PhD in the Application of Computational Intelligence Methods in Music from the Department of Mathematics, University of Patras, having obtained a Master’s Degree in Computational Mathematics and a degree in Mathematics from the same Department. His research interests concern the connection of artificial intelligence and machine learning methods with cognitive science methods through music. He has experience in participation and coordination in European and national research projects, as well as in the development of commercial audio and music applications. He is a collaborating faculty member at the ATHENA Research Center.

Chrisoula Alexandraki holds a PhD in Systematic Musicology from the University of Hamburg (2014), an MSc in Music Technology from the University of York (1998) and a Degree in Physics from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens (1997). Her primary research interests are in the fields of Networked Music Performance (NMP), Machine Listening, Computational Musicology and Human-Machine Interfaces.

Dr. Evaggelos Kaselouris is an Assistant Professor specializing in “Simulations of Vibro-Acoustics with applications to musical instruments”. He holds a diploma from the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Physical Sciences of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), he completed postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the NTUA, while he holds a PhD from the Technical University of Crete. His research concerns the modelling and simulation of: coupled applied physical problems and vibro-acoustics problems with applications in the study of musical instruments. He is a collaborating faculty member at the Institute of Plasma Physics and Lasers of HMU.

Dr Spyros Polychronopoulos

Dr. Spyros Polychronopoulos is a physicist with a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is entrenched in the world of sound, exploring its multifaceted nature as both a scientific phenomenon and an artistic expression. His academic fields of interest focus on acoustic levitation, musical instrument simulation, and room acoustics. He has published several papers in the field of acoustics, and one of his works, “Acoustic Levitation with Optimized Reflective Metamaterials” was awarded as it reached the 10th position among the most downloaded papers in 2020 in Nature’s Scientific Reports. Further, his engagement in the aesthetic aspects of sound resulted in the release of 20 albums, collaborations with various musicians, and numerous concerts worldwide. His innovative releases, Live Electronic Music (LEM, Room40, 2016) and Nyfida (Room40, 2024), revolutionized the distribution and listening to music, offering a dynamic and interactive experience.

Panagiota-Styliani Paschalidou

Dr. Stella Paschalidou is a Lecturer at the department of Music Technology & Acoustics. She holds a BSc in Physics (Aristotle University), an MSc in Music Technology (University of York) and a PhD (Durham University). Her research interests include embodied music cognition, audio interaction / electronic musical instruments and computational ethnomusicology. More specifically, she is interested in studying music-related body movements through the use of technologies and methods for capturing, recording and analysis of movement and other multimodal data. She has been teaching in the department since 2004 and lately she has been co-directing the Image, Movement and Sound Technologies Laboratory.
